Amazon Echo Dot 3 Full Setup Video

hello Automators or should i say new Automators? Likely you’ve gone out you’ve purchased an Amazon Echo Dot probably the third geeneration here and what I wanted to do was put together everything we’ve done on the channel here show you how to get that device fully set up so what I have for you below in the description is a full index of this video it’s going to allow you to go to different components of the setup process here so you’re going to be able to get your Amazon Echo Dot fully set up in your home working with a number of different systems here and really doing everything I think you could possibly want it to do so let’s get going now the first thing to tell you is I had previously set up this Amazon Echo Dot 3 on the channel it’s a very simple setup process so let’s walk through that video let you guys watch that one and then we’ll come back and I’ll give you the troubleshooting component here for getting the device set up if you remember the box from the original Echo Dot or the second generation of the Echo Dot you’ll actually remember that it was much slimmer so this is a much thicker package here and you can see the device as soon as you get in there you can see it right in there now I’m going to pull it out and it really still is the same device the same size as it originally was no after you get the plastic off you can see the four buttons still on the top there you can see the plus and the minus those are your volume buttons and then you also have on this side the mute microphone button and on the other side here we have the wake button for Amazon Alexa another thing to show you here is it appears that there are four far-field microphones on the top of this device so you see if those four dots are those four holes in the device that appears to be four microphones on the top of this whereas you know if you were comparing this to the second generation you can see here as I get it closer to the screen you can see that there was actually just one in the middle of this device as I open up the rest of the package here you do get a manual from Amazon not that we’re gonna use that that’s what you have this for here there’s actually a second manual here and then you’re getting basically a card for things to try with the Amazon Echo Dot now under that of course is going to be our power or our AC adapter here so what I’ll tell you about this new device from Amazon the power adapter is quite long actually I’m gonna put that around five feet here it’s definitely my wingspan and on top of that this is a single connector that goes into the back of the Amazon Echo Dot you can see it right there there’s a second connector there and that’s going to be the same 3.5 millimeter connector that we’ve always had so I’ve just gone ahead and plugged in the Amazon Echo Dot I’ll let it go through its short boot up process here hello your device is ready for setup just download the Alexa app and follow the instructions Bonjour votre pave a clip on a coffee collosseum delicious real educational exercise DVDs SP on all right now here in Canada you just heard it it went through English and French and that is relatively important here in Canada so that was a nice little touch that Amazon did there for those of us in Canada all right now I have my Amazon Echo Dot sitting here it’s ready to go with its connection process you can see the little orange ring going so I’m going to go into the Amazon tap and what’s amazing about this latest processor this latest setup process that amazon has created is when I ordered this through my Amazon account before it showed up on my doorstep I had this inside the app so that’s quite the setup process so now inside the app you can see I’m going to go into the devices section or the home control section of the app so from the devices screen here there’s a couple of different methods you can go to get through the setup process the first one is in the top left you can see Echo and Alexa, I can tap on that icon and go into a setup process there because as I said Amazon’s already added this device to this application the other method is here top right I can click that plus and add a device down here so I’m just going to go in through the other method you could see right

there just hit add a device and it starts the same process but here here’s my Echo Dot which I just ordered it shown up in the app and I can just tap on that and now I’m in the device settings and if I simply tap change here next to the Wi-Fi network we start the setup process on this Echo Dot so now they’re just saying let’s go ahead get you connected to Wi-Fi make sure the orange light is here tap continue again and now they want you to connect your iPhone to the Echo Dot so what they’re telling you is to go to the Wi-Fi settings on sigh phone and select Amazon – qbk network so you’re going to see that actually on Wi-Fi when you’re looking for Wi-Fi networks to connect to here so I’m just gonna skip over there we’re gonna go into settings on my iPhone very similar process on an Android device go into Wi-Fi here and now you can see that Amazon – qbk is right there so I’m going to tap on that you’ve connected now go back to the Alexa so now I’m just gonna skip back and as soon as I skip back moves us along here in the process so I’m tapping continue to continue this setup process again I really haven’t done anything as of yet but you can see I have a previously saved to Amazon a Wi-Fi network so because I have these other devices in my home and I’ve chosen to save those credentials there’s that Wi-Fi network if I didn’t have it I just simply have to tap on one of these other networks and go ahead and put in my credentials regardless I’m going to tap on that account and now it’s just preparing the Echo Dot for connection to my Wi-Fi network your device is ready so there you go that’s it that’s the entire setup process right there Amazon really meant it when they said that this was a simple setup process now so alright so there you go like I said relatively simple not a lot to it but if you’re struggling let’s talk about troubleshooting in the first thing to talk about is Wi-Fi troubleshooting so I actually have another video that I’m going to show you a small component of here and let you get your Wi-Fi trouble shot and if you’re still struggling at that point then you need to probably talk to Amazon a little bit here on that note in terms of wireless connections a G B or n those are the wireless the the wireless standards that you can use to connect to your Amazon Echo, the whole suite of products so that allows you a router that is dual band so 2.4 and or 5 gigahertz you can connect to with these devices you can choose to be on the 5 gigahertz band for these devices if you’d like and that will help with network congestion in a lot of cases and that’s one of the things I want to talk to you about so what can go wrong with the setup here number one you can put in the wrong password and that’s honestly the most likely thing that you’re going to do here as you go through the Wi-Fi setup process the second thing that could be is that network congestion and in terms of Wi-Fi troubleshooting if your router is on any sort of security setting other than WPA or wpa2 you’re not going to be able to get these connected so that’s a very important piece here in terms of troubleshooting steps here’s what I would suggest you do and actually this is relatively similar to what Amazon tells you to do on their support site so what you’re going to want to do if this is not able to connect number one head into the application look at that device and look at the wireless and if the wireless settings are showing you basically a lock on them your password is wrong go ahead change that next up if your password has worked or you know you’re using your right password then what you’re going to want to do is basically restart your router to allow these to try and connect and I’ll tell you the reason I think Amazon tells you to do that is based on their last troubleshooting step as well now what they tell you to do there is basically disconnect some old devices and obviously this isn’t going to work for a ton of us but if you do have a lot of network congestion at that 2.4 gigahertz which is primary for this to try and connect if you do have a lot of devices there you’ve got a lot of devices around this or around the router itself then you might run into just

network congestion or traffic basically on your router and making it impossible for these to connect so if you’re also finding after this that your device is getting disconnected quite often you might want to switch it to the 5 gigahertz on your router if you have that option or yes switch some other devices or in the end switch your router so those are the basic troubleshooting steps that you can go through here there’s not a lot else to give you around this that it’s a pretty structured wireless setup so now you have your device set up it’s the primary speaker it’s going to use itself and we need the Amazon application in order to be able to set up the device now the difference between you and I is I go into the application here is if you’re a first time person you had to put in a new Amazon account you had to put that in there and and get that all set up but now assuming you have the device set up let’s go over to the devices screen and we’re going to start there and we’re going to go and look at our actual Echo Dot here and go through the device settings first off ok now in the device settings you know what I’m just going to show you a couple things really quickly here you can see all your different devices that you have in the home there’s also an all devices there and then all your groups that you’ve created which are essentially rooms and you could have created specialized ones you also have the speaker groups which I’ll show you how to do a little bit later and at the bottom there’s a stereo sub pair so I do have the Amazon Echo Sub here and it is paired with a couple of Echos so we’re going to go into the Echo and the voice assistant name button there at the top and I’m looking for my Echo Dot now I haven’t placed this one in a room specifically to actually show you these things so it’s the Echo Dot three and this is the device settings green and this is what we’re going to walk through first the Edit name button this means you can actually change the name of the device and this is how you’ll refer to it and so I’m just going to call this one dot and that’s all I want to call it and now whenever I say play X on dot that’s the device it’s going to do that with so let’s go ahead and do that play foo fighters on dot stop no I’m not kidding then I can refer to dot so I can come over here to an Amazon Echo play Foo Fighters on Dot shuffling songs by Foo Fighters so the one thing to note there you saw stop stop stop no you have to say on that device if you’re not actually speaking to the device that you want to stop the process on you have to refer to that device so that’s why the name becomes important in the future and in the future speaker groups and things like that as well so now if we wanted to attach Bluetooth devices this device is capable of outputting music through the auxiliary port on the back so that’s a 3.5 millimeter you could just directly connect that and then use that going forward or you can use the Bluetooth capability now it goes in a couple of different ways we could Bluetooth to another speaker if we’d like and then we can also use our phone as the Bluetooth controlling device now what I’m going to show you today is how to use the Bluetooth device capability in general and then we’ll go you know through a demo of broadcasting to another Bluetooth device so because I tapped into that Bluetooth setting I can pair a new device and it goes through a bit of a search process here and it wants to make sure basically your device is in pairing mode so I’m just going to make sure yep my phone is in pairing mode it’s ready to go and I can go to my Bluetooth settings in my phone here and as I do that if I scroll down to the bottom I will find my Echo-qbk so that’s what it told me as a name so you have to wait a little bit for that to show up and now I’m just pairing those two devices together connected to Brian’s iPhone so you get your paired next time just say connect my phone that is an important piece there now you can just say connect my phone or enable Bluetooth and it should make that pairing immediately so you can see

in my iphone settings there it does say connected and when I come back to the application you can see my iPhone there now this will work now that I’m paired by bluetooth this will work with any application so you could use Apple music you could use Spotify it doesn’t matter I’m using Google Play Music and as I hit play because I’m Bluetooth connected this is the speaker that’s going to start up next song volume up stop so you can see I could do voice control once I was Bluetooth connected now that doesn’t mean that I can access my playlists or albums or or any of that I can’t control into the music application so you know it if you start to control that way what’s going to happen is you’re going to actually switch services and you won’t be controlling from your phone that’s ok but you’ll just be controlling from the device the dot itself alright now I’ve shown you how to play some Bluetooth there there’s a couple of different ways of disconnecting obviously I could do that from my phone you’ll know how to turn off your own Bluetooth radio so let me show you this disconnect from my phone now disconnected from Brian’s iPhone now I could also use words like disable Bluetooth items like that but you could see I could actually just say disconnect from the phone so back into the application here I think that shows you how to set up bluetooth obviously if you’re connecting another speaker through bluetooth the process is in Reverse here so you’re able to actually output to that speaker inside the Bluetooth device settings here I just want to show you one more thing as you tap down that little arrow in your device you can disconnect and you can forget the device now I find myself wanting to disconnect and then sometimes I want to forget the device because I find it just pairs too easily so if you want to ever forget a device that’s it all right now back in the device settings you could see up here there is a volume bar that you can actually control there obviously you can control it from the device itself if you want to control volume you can use your voice to control volume as well just saying volume up or volume to X percent whatever you want but you can also control it here but only while the device is actually playing so you can see that little error code that it threw all right now continuing down here here’s the Wi-Fi network if you hit change then you can change the password that’s been put into this regarding the Wi-Fi network so if you see a lock there that’s your problem right away if you’re unable to connect to Wi-Fi or the device is telling you every time you speak to it go to the settings in the app and check your Wi-Fi so if that’s the problem if there’s a lock there that’s the problem change your Wi-Fi password and it will update now the stereo pair I’m going to show you a little bit later in the video that’s part of the final part of the process here and I’ll talk a little bit specifically about how to do those stereo pairings the Echo remote if you have a Fire HD remote or a fire stick or you have all those different Echo remotes basically you can start the pairing process there we won’t go through that or the Alexa gadgets there all right now moving down to the sounds part of the general settings here on the device you can see a slider here for setting the volume of alarms timers and notification so that’s an independent volume control actually from your music volume control so you can use that and then you can see the little ascending alarm capability here so let’s go ahead and I’ll show you the differential here set an alarm for 951 is that 951 in the morning or in the evening AM alarm set for 951 a.m. so we’re gonna see that start here in just a second but you can also see the alarm sounds that you’re able to set so there’s the default sound and then there’s the ability to set these other custom ones I’ll let you play with those every time you tap them you hear them stop

okay so that’s all you have to do to actually get that alarm to stop you just tell it to stop now I’m going to set the ascending alarm and then we’ll go ahead and set another one here so set an alarm for 9:52 a.m. alarm set for 9:52 a.m now there’s a notification section here so basically if you’re getting a notification of you know a message different things there you can set the default to none if you don’t want to hear anything basically and then there’s an incoming call ringer so when you’re getting the call from someone someone’s dropping in on your device you can set that on or off the other thing here is a start and an end of request so so you can see how gradual it is now stop alarm now the other thing you saw when I turned on that start of request and end of request there’s a little ping sound at either end of the conversation with the device so that does help you as you know as you’re using this device I would say turn that on because you don’t have to look at the device you can actually hear that audible confirmation of it responding to your wake word there so now moving down again there’s some audio controls here this is the equalizer section so there is the ability to control the equalizer through your voice so we’ll go ahead and we’ll do that while we’re playing music here but also you know you can control it right here you could turn up the bass and you can see the device responding as I move those components now what I’ll tell you for an Echo Dot 3 is that the bass is a little more aggressive than the mid-range so I would actually turn up that mid-range and the treble a little bit in general I think you get a better sound from the device turn up the bass no it didn’t instantly show up in my application but if I go out of the audio controls and come back in you can see that it’s moved about 20 to 30 percent in a direction there so that’s the ability to adjust those now do not disturb mode it will only bother you with alarms and timers so this is maybe something you want to set and routines are a great place to set this you can also schedule it as you can see here to stop disturbing you basically you know and and I would all say is I’d rather do this in the evening myself so you just set the time and you know I’m gonna go to 11 to 6 a.m. there everyday struggling a bit with the sliders here but you can see it’s been set now and from on every day it will not disturb me except for alarm so you can still set your alarm for 555 a.m. and it will still go off now the settings for communications are you know this a bit of a deeper discussion we’ll do that a little later in the video but do you want communications enabled for this device specifically so you could actually turn off different devices in your home as you grow out here so what this is is the ability to have announcements go out and the ability to drop in on devices so you can have friends family people with other eco devices or this application drop in on your device and and send you announcements and things like that so right now just for the device settings it’s kind of either on or off locations a pretty simple device setting set your location in order to get you know navigation help or weather help or those kinds of things that you know that helps you with local news as well so you can just set your location in there you can set the timezone you can change your region here so I’m going to go to North America obviously and then you can pick the different time zones now I’m in the Mountain Time Zone here and there you go so you’re set in terms of a time zone you can also change the wake word so if you don’t want to use Amazon’s default wake word you can change that so now follow up mode heading into there that mode allows you to basically keep the microphone open for a set period of time here to allow you to continue the conversation with your device next up is language now you can set the different languages when you try and set a language that doesn’t

match your account they basically tell you some of the settings aren’t going to work but you can actually adjust the account you’re using with this device if you have one registered in other countries so you know that’s maybe a way to get some extra features I’ve done it in the past myself but it messes with a bunch of other settings so the measurement units do you want to use Celsius Fahrenheit miles or kilometers I’m Canadian so I’m going to change to those things and then who is this device registered to and the about the device so you can go into that you can see the device software version so if you’re ever wondering what software version or what version you have on this device there it is in the About section so that clears it up or that kind of finishes it for the basic device settings let’s move in to the other parts of the application now and your account settings so back to the home page here we’re going to go into the device or the account settings and the menu in general here so the lists capability this is inherent to all of your devices in your home you can set your list and you can go into each list and you can see I’ve added a few items here to my shopping list and I have a to-do list and I can go ahead and I can manage them through the device here so let’s go ahead and create a few things actually one more thing I’ve created another list called gift list and you can see something is completed called nice for my mom something nice for my mom I had added that in a previous video here so let’s go through the list capabilities add butter to my shopping list I put butter on your shopping list now you can see how quick that was take butter off of my shopping list I checked off butter from your shopping list so again you can see how quick it is to manage that list add Creede another video to my to-do list create another video added to your to-do list so again that’s going to be there already create another video and I can manage it in here if I’d like I just tap on the item I can also add any item I’d like just physically through that plus button now this gift list that’s a bit of a different capability here this is a list that I added like I told you but you can add things still to that so add Echo Dot to my gift list I could I’d add it to gift so there you go it’s right there the Echo Dot is on that gift list so if I’d like I can create another list create a new list what should I name the list automate your life tasks create a list called automate your life tasks right yes I’ve created automate your life tasks list what would you like to add to it build a video I’ve added built a video to your automate your life tasks list is there anything else you’d like to add revamp the website I’ve added revamp the website to your automate your life tasks list any other items no that’s good all right now you can see inside the application here both of those items are there and I can check them off as I build my video and as I revamp the website which by the way gives you a little indication and what I have to do here but there’s one other thing I want to show you within the lists capabilities there’s also a Settings component to this that I want to show you now as I come down I went into the menu and went into settings and now I’m in lists if you’re using something like to do it you can go ahead you can hit that plus or you can go get the skill from the skill store which I’ll show you in a little bit but you could go get that skill and then you could connect it here now what I’ll tell you about most of these services is they’re very good services on their own their integration here it sometimes introduces delays so you can go ahead and you can add these other lists that you have in these other services or you can add that integration is sometimes your list if you’re going and you’re managing them you know one evening on the web they’re not going to show up here until the following day and that’s what I’ll tell you happens with to do this all right now the reminders an alarm section that’s in the menu again and as you go over to that section what I’ll tell you is it’s managed actually

by device so all of these things are set by device now you can see up at the top I’ve unplugged my second Echo here and so I need to go and find the device that I want to manage reminders alarms and timers on now I can physically add them here in the application so again Amazon’s giving you the ability to create these things so I can say add a reminder here I can create repeating reminders to do different things and it will announce from this device obviously I could choose to have it announced from a different device so they’re not going to show you how to create those physically here that’s just a simple form alarms you can see those two alarms that I set up earlier in the video I could turn those back on if I wanted them to you know happen again but you can see that they are specifically for specific dates now the the date and time ran here are the time the sound I can set it per alarm if I’d like instead of setting it per device this would override your device setting so just keep that in mind and then do you want to repeat it every day now you can also do this all by voice which I’m going to show you and you can delete any alarm that you’d like the last thing here is the ability to set a timer and you can set multiple timers and you can also manage your timer volume here so now as you manage those timer volumes you’re actually going into the device settings again here so you know just keep that in mind you’re actually changing the device settings if you go through this method so let’s create some reminders some alarms and some timers set a reminder every Tuesday at 7 a.m. to take out the garbage okay I’ll remind you every Tuesday at 7 a.m. so there you go there it is already and I created a recurring one and it will remind me on this device so you might want to put that in a specific location if that’s what you’re going to use to get that reminder add an alarm at 6:45 a.m. every day alarms set for every day at 6:45 a.m set a timer for 2 minutes 2 minutes starting now set a second timer for eggs for 5 minutes second a timer 5 minutes starting now so there you go now you can see that name that I put into the the timer there so that gives you the ability to manage that a little bit so if I want to go ahead and cancel that timer I can cancel it by name now so cancel my second eggs timer second base timer cancelled so you go it’s gone right away and cancel all timers canceling all of your timers cancel my reminders you have one reminder take out the garbage every Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. do you want me to cancel all instances of this reminder yes take out the garbage for every Tuesday at 7 a.m. cancelled now clearly I could go ahead and I could manage that alarm but I’m just going to tap that and and just have the slider come off now again down at the bottom there’s no settings so you go back to the device settings for sounds there so that basically runs you through reminders and alarms you can see a lot of capability there and I could be setting these on different devices to have different reminders at different times so that’s pretty powerful stuff now next up is the contacts capability and contacts is tied with communications so let’s go through that whole section now so going into contacts and you can see I have all of my contacts imported basically from my phone so when you go into the screen the first time you’re going to get requested to allow it to access the contacts in your device go ahead and do that and then you’re able to reach all these different people now up in the top right here you could add contacts yourself you can blog contacts you can import contacts physically here if you don’t get that notification so you can go ahead and leave that enabled and it will synchronize those contacts I believe it’s every day actually that it will synchronize those contacts so that’s the contacts component and then there’s the communication component and this allows you to do a number of different things here so up in the top right I’ll just take you through the interface really quickly up in the top right there’s a shortcut to the contacts again so you’re able to go back and forth between the contacts really

quickly I can make phone calls from here I can send messages from here I can drop in so that’s basically dropping into somebody else’s device and I can make announcements in my home so announcements are the most simple thing I can tap that button and if I’d like I can type something and have it play and and basically play on all my devices that are set up in this application and set up in this account or I can go ahead and I can say something no I think I’d rather say something I’m on my way home now I’m sending that announcement dropping in if I’m hitting any of the buttons here I’m making a call from this to one of these devices I’m sending a message from my phone to these devices or I’m dropping in so we’ll go through each of these as a demo here now as I select a contact I have a number of capabilities here I can go through an audio or a video call those are data based calls or I can make a physical phone call so what I’m going to do is I’m going to actually use my Echo Dot to make that phone call now because you can see I could do it from my phone and it would just cause my phone to make a phone call to those devices now the other thing I can do is do the message and drop in but let’s do the call and then the message and then the drop and functionality call Brian did you mean Brian yes calling so you can see rain here like to talk so you can see on my phone here I can accept or decline so I’ve accepted here on my phone just you so you can see that you can make those device phone calls I turn the volume way down here so you wouldn’t hear it but I can also mute my microphone here if I’d like and you can see I can turn on and off the speaker capability as well on my phone there is a number pad that’s at only going to work between basically phones as you can make those device audio calls between phones if both people have that application so now I can hang up from either device I could hang up from here but what’s the point in having an Echo Dot hang up so there you go and I can hit a little rate call there so let’s continue send a message to Brian what’s the message how are you got it should I send it yes sending from Brian so you can see here’s those other capabilities are basically the other capability to see that message so you can see just this little it’s kind of a greenish yellow ring that’s showing up on these devices so let’s go ahead and get that message it’s been sent to all of them what messages do I have one for Brian from Brian how are you received just now so if I’d like I could send a reply obviously to that contact and they would get that message it’d be sitting on their device for when they get home so that’s that’s actually pretty fun stuff to be able to send contacts back and forth now of course the drop in capability here I’m going to do that from the Echo Dot again so drop in on Brian so you can see I’ve actually dropped in on this device and I have to turn down the volume or else we’re just gonna get a bunch of echo between these two devices but there’s actually the ability to have a phone conversation here essentially through your two devices so you know you can go ahead you can do that drop into different things and you can manage those settings by device so you could enable or disable and you can choose which of your devices is the

primary as well so stop drop in so there you go that’s how you can end the call you can also end it a number of different ways and I can drop in here on any of my devices and you can see that I can actually choose through this although this device is on do not disturb mode so let’s move on back into the menu and we’re going to go into routines now in order to give you a full you know routine setup video I’d have to create a whole nother 20 minute video but what I am going to do is show you some of the basics of routines and what you can do with an Amazon Echo Dot and this is going to bring us into a little bit of the home control discussion so now that I’ve gone into the menu have gone into routines you can see your routines and you may have one there or one demo and then they have a featured section where they have some pre created routines now you’re you’re able to basically say goodnight this is a featured routine I could enable it very simply and this is what the device will do I can add an action if I’d like additionally and then it will say a random phrase from goodnight it turns off a whole bunch of lights so you can see it’s already identified a bunch of lights I have in my home if you don’t have any whole devices connected you won’t have that yet we’ll go through connecting other devices here in a little bit but ultimately you can see it’s turning off everything in my house and it’s doing it from the device I speak to or I can ask it to specifically do it from specific devices so that’s just base routine that’s sitting there it’s a good night routine now in terms of creating your own routines this is where it gets really interesting in complex because this can truly truly automate parts of your life all right now inside the routines button and basically I want you to think of it like this you have a trigger and you have a number of actions that can occur after that trigger and that’s one of the nice things here about the routines capability on these echoed dots and the Echo devices in general you have one trigger to multiple actions and so we’re gonna go into the wind this happens section here and you can see there’s three there’s the voice the schedule and the device so first thing the voice we could set any phrase here basically or a phrase that isn’t something specific like if I say Echo Dot it doesn’t work but I could say something like it’s movie time and have that work now I’m not going to show you that just yet but the schedule capability here I want to show you that at certain time so I could say 10:25 on weekdays weekends I can select a day a specific day if I’d like or I can say every day so we could have that going on again I’m going to cancel that and go back through device because this is the one that’s the most interesting to me personally I have a number of connected devices and again you might not have anything here but as you go forward you will start to get more connected devices sensors things like that now two of these sensors are from a Samsung smartphone connected system that I have here and one of them is actually on this Echo Plus right here the new Echo Plus comes with temperature sensor onboard that you can use as a trigger so I can go into that temperature and I can say when it’s above or below that temperature and I can choose I can also choose which scale it’s on I speak Celsius I’m Canadian so you can go ahead you can adjust what temperature you’re looking for and then you can hit that now just to show you the the routines functionality here I’m going to use a voice trigger I could also use you know like motion sensors you saw motion sensors I could use those triggering to do certain things and you know there’s not more smarts than that really right now but ultimately that that capability is coming here so let’s just say we’re going to create a naptime routine so whenever I just say nap time then I can add certain actions now what I’ll say is there’s a lot of connected services here that we haven’t talked about in the video just yet but again I’m just showing you the basics so before naptime I could start a number of things and let’s say I wanted to create basically a 45-minute nap for myself so you know I can set something that the device will say and I can do something custom if I’d like and that will allow me to have the device say something so we’ll just say

okay have a nice sleep hit next now that’s the first thing it’s going to say and I’ll show you how to rearrange those actions now adding another action because like I said I can set those actions here I can set multiple now device settings so what’s the first thing I’d want to do maybe I want to stop the audio on I could say all the devices but let’s just say that device and that’s it it stopped that let’s add another and I want to take the volume down just in case so there you go now it’s at 15% or volume to 2 now if I wanted I could actually get a notification at a certain point so we’re gonna use that in a little bit here now you could go ahead and you could set smart home triggers you can control devices so let’s say I wanted to turn off all of my hue bright hue lights here I want them all off and you can see that now it’s way up here like I said probably want to rearrange these things so I’ve just pulled from the two lines there pulled that down so continuing on and you can see I can add a ton of actions here if I wanted I could add calendar events yeah I could get a message I can add music I can add news all kinds of things here but the weight functionality so let’s say I wanted to wait 45 minutes now why would I want to wait 45 minutes well because I’m setting an app routine so you know maybe you want to have a gym routine where you start music and then you wait 45 minutes and then you turn that off as signifying that you’re done so there you go you wait 45 minutes and now you turn you turn the vote the volume basically back up on your device and I’m actually going to get rid of the set volume to two initially and take this down and as long as I as long as I make sure here that my set volume is below my 45 minutes it will wait 45 minutes and then set the volume to 7 and then let’s start music so here I can select connected provider so I have a few connected providers you’re going to see iTunes right now or Apple music if you’ve connected that service in the US that’s now available and then you also have the different services here so let’s say Amazon music and I can set a timer for how long I wanted to play for so let’s say I just wanted to play for 10 minutes and I wanted to play Foo Fighters so now I’ve set all of this up and I can hit save now one thing I’m going to do before we move forward because I want to show you this routine I’m just going to set the delay or the wait time to just one minute and then we’ll trigger this routine now it says hey we’ve saved this but it might take up to one whole minute for it to show up so let me just show you that you can go back in and you can edit these routines you can disable them as well so that allows you to manage what routines are available on your device now we should be able to go and trigger this in just a minute alright now I’ve gone ahead I’ve waited a few minutes here to make sure that my routine was set in with the device let’s go ahead and trigger it and then we’ll wait the minute to basically see that that music comes on so let’s get going nap time okay have a nice sleep so you can see the lights have actually gone off here in the room I’m able to control those back on if I’d like but essentially I’ve set the the mood as we’re waiting for this to trigger actually the you know the routines the capability there is going to grow over time here and I think we’re going to see some new things from Amazon overtime like custom triggers so custom statements I can’t find the song two fighters regardless it tried to play the song apparently I typed in two fighters I never saw that when I did it earlier but that would have triggered the group Foo Fighters had I done that right now clearly you can see that the routine in general work but let’s go ahead and get our light turn back on here so

turn on the basement office light okay so there you go you could see I turn that on and clearly it’s a lot brighter in here now so what I’ll say in general is the next thing to really talk about music audiobooks podcasts those kinds of things so down at the bottom there is a play button and you may also still have the version of the application that actually shows music and books here in the menu but I just went into there and you can see recently what I’ve played that that capability is right there you can see my Kindle library so again attached to those Amazon accounts right so any connected music service that you’ve played it’s right there and then your Kindle library you can actually get books to be read through this so this just is based on your Amazon account now so now down below all of this all of these things you might not have a lot at the start but here’s the music streaming so what you’re probably going to see is a card instead of where it says more music streaming services you’re probably going to see something that says connect your music services now here are my connected services you can see I already have multiple services connected if you didn’t it’s as simple as tapping in and I’ll just unlink my Spotify account here and then show you the process for linking so you can see it said link and basically I’m already logged in as myself here but you’d have to put in your credentials and I’m just hitting okay so that’s really it in terms of connecting so back into that same screen just to show you one thing if I’d like I can choose that as a default music service so you can go ahead and tap on that choose default music service I’m going to continue with Amazon music because I have that that prime service so that gets me access to a lot of music right there tune in is also here in Canada I don’t know I don’t know all the countries that’s available in but you know tune in is vailable as a radio service so we can start radios from all over the world basically so that’s your music so let’s go ahead and let’s start music on this device using that service play dear Rouge shuffling songs by dia Rouge on Amazon music next song stop play dear Rouge on Spotify so you can see a couple of different things that I did there I actually said I wanted to play it on that other connected service the other Spotify service I also controlled it here and there with my voice now I could throw across to a different device so play dear Rouge on Spotify on Brian’s Echo shuffling songs bye dear Rouge from Spotify on Brian’s Echo I forgot I forgot to turn that on stop so you could see I actually threw it across to this device over here and I was able to stop it here I could also say stop on Brian’s Echo over here and that would actually stop it so that was the name of this device Brian’s Echo now in terms of playing audiobooks so you can see I have primal branding in my Kindle library so read primal branding to listen to primal branding this title I nautical dot CA the first 30 days of membership are free so you can see rain they’re you know they want you to basically go and get the audiobook version of this so that’s something you’re going to need to consider as you go forward playing books right but here’s the capability you can see this I’m just going to hit after I’ve tapped on the book I’m going to play and stories are constructed around a vision for the future and transformation IBM’s evolution from a business supply company to a key punch card company and ultimately so you can see it can actually read your Kindle library books to you and it’s just as simple as tapping on there something else to note

there you can see some of my groups they’re not allowing that right now here for me at the very least I’m sure in the future they’re going to allow you to do that kind of a thing so play primal branding for my Kindle library sorry I can’t find that book on Kindle play a book for my Kindle library resuming from Kindle primal branding create salads for your brand your company and your future talk about her cousins in Italy at the time it seemed irrelevant to him so you could see the title there I was struggling getting the title right it actually made as much sense to come here and you can resume and pause and stop books from your library so you’re able to control in a couple of different methods and I’ll say in general with your Kindle library probably makes a little more sense to come here start the books from here then try and get that whole title right because some book titles can be pretty long so now in terms of podcasts you know if you want to go ahead and listen to podcast you can request that to start and stop just the same you have to know the name of your podcast you can go ahead and request that alright now I think it’s time to go through our account settings and the account settings affect you in general in terms of what you’re doing with your Ecco devices and the number of Ecco devices that you’ll end up with in your home because on average actually people who buy one end up buying a few of these so just kind of get ready for that now inside the settings you saw I went to the menu there and you can see I have the Alexa account and then I can go back into device settings but then you can manage all these different components and services that are attached overall to this application into all of your devices so that’s kind of a different level we manage the device settings but now we’re managing the account settings so I’m going to go into my account specifically here and you can see a number of things so recognize voices kids related skills voice purchasing all of those kinds of top-level features here so inside of recognized voices you can see your voice profile and you can go ahead and you can create this profile now I have been using this device for a long time without making purchases and without trying to do those things I only do those things for demos really you know so you can go ahead and do this and here’s how the process goes so now that I’ve gone into here basically it’s prepared and I can go to any of the devices I have in my home and then I can just ask it to learn my voice so let’s go through it learn my voice okay first I’ll need your name and then I’ll create a voice profile for you is this Ryan yes all right this should only take a few minutes repeat after me play music from the 60s play music from the 60s Echo make a drop-in call to my father Echo make a drop-in call to my father all right well I’m not going to do that right here but now inside my application you can actually see it already knows me if I wanted I could delete that voice I could have it learn my voice there’s some benefits to doing this again I haven’t needed to do that but with certain accents or certain kind of regional dialects you know you might want to do this to help the device and I’ll say all ten of those were rather interesting statements have to make and I could see that they were trying to get me to make certain sounds with my voice so here is the kids skills thing here so do you want to access kids skills on your device you could just turn that on and that’s again across all devices now the voice purchases so I had turned these on before purchases by voice you need both of those you know your your address and a method of paying every time so most people with an Amazon Prime account have these already in and you know do you need a voice code so you can reset that voice code and do you want to have recognized voices so what we just did not have to use that voice code and that’s why I say you don’t have to teach the device your your voice necessarily but it does help you in terms of not having to remember a four-digit voice code or a pin essentially okay now into

the voice responses section here I’m only able to show you brief others other features and things that will show up over time here but brief mode essentially shortens the responses in some cases not in all cases obviously if you’re asking for certain search results then you’re gonna get all of those but brief mode allows sometimes for you to just get a sound or something back and basically stop having so much interaction with the device itself all right now two things that are hand-in-hand here at the bottom of the account settings here here’s your settings for basically your history the last bunch of things you’ve done you’ve done and you can delete each voice recording on its own if you’d like now where you can manage this a little bit in a quicker way is through the privacy portion of it here and you can go into a review voice history and then you can go into a date range whatever you’d like you can say this week and then you can delete all the recordings for this week so that gives you a quick way to manage your privacy basically through this device now there’s a couple more settings here and these are pretty complex things so I’m not going to go deep into them but managing skill permissions so do you want certain skills to have access to your full name or your address or those things as you go in you have to log into your account one more time and then you can remove and allow certain skills to be able to access those pieces of information obviously in some cases those skills need access in other cases you can manage those and they don’t need that it’s the same thing with how your data improves the voice assistant here so you can see help develop new features and then do you want to use your messages to improve transcriptions so this is basically Amazon taking your messages that you send and then using that knowledge or using that analysis of your voice recording to improve the transcriptions that come out at the other and so you know if you want to help there you can leave that on but I tend to turn that one off inside the account settings again here here’s the device settings this allows you to go to all of the different devices in your home that have been connected that’s a quick route we can do that in the devices section as well and notification so what’s capable here in terms of notifications are you allowing a push notification to your device same thing with shopping notifications do you want to allow those kinds of things now this is when you’ve ordered from your device this is not every Amazon package that you have so and then you can see down below there were some management of skills notifications you can actually turn those on and off now communications we’ve talked about this before Skype is actually something that you can now link and we’ve seen this partnership grow more and more with Amazon and Microsoft and you can go ahead and add your Skype account and then make calls with Skype so if you want to do that you’re just hitting the plus here and then you’re requesting to call with that service basically from that point on now music we’ve already been through music at a pretty high level so we don’t need to go back through that but TV and video we haven’t actually spoken about as of yet if you have a fire TV device this is where you come and you start making those connections there’s other connected TV services that could be located in the skills and we’re going to get to the skills and connecting other devices and services basically but you know right there is where you go in if you have it say in the US there’s lots of devices that interface with an Echo Dot that you can control so lots of DVRs and things like that you can go there if you’re not seeing your device head to the skill section which again we’ll talk about a little bit so moving down you can see there’s a number of things now that basically relate to some of those routines we talked about a little bit earlier now the flash briefing what do you want to have as content when you ask for your Flash briefing or ask for the news now you can hit that plus and it takes you to the skill store so this is kind of the start of talking about skills and you can go into the new section and then you can pick different news sources that basically get added in and then you can arrange them over here in the flash briefing service here and you can turn on and off different ones with that little ability so the edit button allows you to customize which ones are coming first when you ask for your news so down to traffic and traffic is basically you know if you wanted to know how to get to and from work and you had stops every

day so let’s say you drop off your kids every day at a at a daycare or at a at school or whatever then you can put in your home address you put in your work address and you can even put in that stop and it will actually tell you as you asked about traffic or if you have a routine set up it’s actually going to tell you how that commute is going to go and your route that you could take if if it’s really bad in terms of sports you know that’s pretty simple too you can just simply add a team and you can search for a team and then when you add that and you ask about sports then that’s the information you’re going to get you’re going to get your team’s sports basically now I’m going to skip calendars for a second here and we’re going to go to lists this is where we saw earlier in the video basically the connection services to other list management or task management services so this is where you can come and connect your account if you’d like to those other services again each service you want to do a little bit of reading there because each service works a little bit differently with the Echo Dot or with any of the Echo products okay so now it’s time to talk Calendar and the calendar integration is really really good here from Amazon they have a lot of choices for you so you know as an Android owner you have the ability to link a Google account that gives you access to the calendar and your email actually these days you can actually ask especially in the US right now as I make this video you can ask for emails to be read and you can ask that I get an email from this person so really really powerful stuff now Microsoft we’ve seen that integration grow and grow and grow and that will continue to grow so again you can link accounts from there and Apple as well and you can actually see I have action required to relink my Apple account that’s not really what I’m using I’m using a Google Calendar so as you link multiple accounts and I’m just going to go into the Microsoft side here and I can go ahead and link Microsoft account and I just have to hit continue and again it’s just a sign-in process so I’m not going to walk through that but after I’ve done that I can pick my default calendar I’m able to basically hit that arrow it drops down and it gives me which calendar I want to use as a basis here so let’s go ahead and add a few items to our Google Calendar add an event to my calendar sure which day and what time today at nine am and what’s the name of the event finish filming I’ll schedule finish filming today at 9:00 a.m. okay okay okay I’ve added that so there you go right there you can see it’s already added that to my calendar and I have defaults in my gmail calendar that means I get 30-minute notify occations before as an email and before on the device itself so that basically sets my calendar up now I can go ahead and request information here from my calendar as well what’s on my calendar for today it looks like I no longer have access to one of your calendar accounts to relink visit the calendar settings in your Alexa app today there is one event remaining at 9:00 a.m there’s finished filming so there you go now it even told me that my Apple account was not linked here anymore and then I had to go ahead and basically fix that before I could get information from that so you can see that integration between multiple calendars is available so you don’t necessarily have to work at synchronizing your care your calendars here with Amazon Echo one last thing here’s the About section so it just shows you the application version you don’t really need to know any more than that all right now once you’ve setup you know all your device settings all your account settings you’ve got those kind of configured as you’d like there is you know a difference on this home screen it starts to fill with different things so you can see my weather you can see the date here and then there starts to be some news and there’s my Kindle you know basically that book that we started and there’s my music here’s my lists these are all things that you’ve already seen so you know there’s a number of things here now that essentially they’re trying

to show you what you can do with a device and then also connect you to your day so it’s becoming a bit of a dashboard here and I think what we’ll see over time is this gets closer and closer on devices like the Echo Show the Echo Spot you can see an interface like this being really powerful on those devices so now it’s time to get into skills and additional connected services and then obviously home control and finally let’s get this Echo Dot connected in you know a couple of different scenarios in terms of audio and show you guys how that all work so inside the devices screen here you can see all the different lights and plugs and switches and things and then there’s an all devices screen and you can also review all your different Echo devices so you know you’ve got a lot of ability to manage that we’ve been through some of those components here you can go into the different sections and you can manage those different things now what I’ve done here is I’ve disconnected my Philips hue account just so that we could actually walk through that connection process here now on top of that you know plugs things like that I’ll show up when you go into all devices though there is a few things I want to show you here I have a wise cam connected service that’s a skill I have Sonos devices so you can see that TV room yiii lights all these different services show up here and you know at Samsung smartthings is another good set of devices to basically connect up to your Echo Dot here so all of those are in here and basically as you build this out as you build out your smart home this is going to fill up more and more as you go now down below you have these groups these are basically groups of devices that are in the different rooms of your house so as you put devices in rooms then they will show up there you put them in groups we’re calling them groups here now speaker groups this is where you can go ahead and you can manage now if you already have a couple of devices in your home and you want to add this you can come in here and you you go into one specific group and then you can go ahead and you can add other devices now obviously if they’re unreachable they’re not going to work here but ultimately you can go ahead and you can add other devices into these different speaker groups so you know with the interface kind of understood generally we’ll fill it up more and we’ll get we’ll get more things added in here but in general your devices screen where you want to start if you want to add a connected service or a connected smart home device you want to hit that plus up top right and then hit add device now I’m adding Philips hue so you can see Philips you right there as a short as a quick link and there’s a number of other brands that you can add right next to it but there’s also the all devices so you could go and you could search for different lights if you have other you tap that other and it’s basically going to allow you to discover these devices so let’s go ahead and I’m just going to use this quick link button here and again it’s going to discover the devices in my home now you can see all these devices started working and what they’re looking for with the Philips you bridge or the Philips you is that bridge and no for first time setup what you can also do is you can go to the skills section here and just search for the product you’re looking for and then you see the enable to use service right there now once you tap that an able to use then you’re going to have to go ahead and link your account now the first time you press on something like Philips you in the devices screen this is what you’re going to get you’re just going to get this connect the account capability and then you’ll go through the discover your devices just because I’ve had this connected to my account before and because I’ve had those lights connected to my Echo before I had to do this in kind of a backwards route so just keep in mind that you just basically have to hit next next next put in your password that you use to set up Philips you so because I’ve gone ahead and linked my account here now I just hit discover devices with this the reason this is a little backwards for me is because simply put I had already connected my Philip’s you account before and I just disabled it so really you know for you what you’re doing is you’re linking your account first you just tap on that Phillips u button you link your account and you’re going to have to push the Philips hue bridge button basically once

to get it to connect to your Echo Dot alright so I have a brand new Amazon Echo Smart Plug here and I’m going to show you how to get that connected here today I’m basically going to plug it in now and then I’m going to make sure it’s on and then I’m going to hit the plus and the add device so let’s get this plugged in I’ve plugged in my smart plug from Amazon here and I’m just going to go up to the top and I’m going to hit add device now as I hit add device I go down to plug and then Amazon that’s the brand that we’re doing here now I have to hit next and basically it wants me to scan the barcode which is on the back of the device but it’s also on the back of their little Start Guide here so I just have to scan this in and now what you have to do is you have to make sure that your plug is in connected turned on so it’s basically in an outlet and now it’s looking for that plug alright so now once you basically have the screen that says you’ve been successful you can actually manage in all devices I can manage that smart plug so it’s easier to find it actually in the plug section of the application there it is it’s called first plug because this is the first Amazon smart plug I’ve connected now you can see that I could edit the name I can change the Wi-Fi network if it didn’t work and if it had a different connection path I could use that I can also go ahead and change the type so this is actually important as you go forward with plugs and switches and different things do you want to call it a plug or a light so when you say turn on all the lights do you want them to turn on or off so now just the ability to manage that plug through your Echo Dot is very simple so turn first plug off okay now did turn off you don’t have to see that but it did actually turn off and you got that little notification from the device itself so that’s about all I’m going to show you today in terms of setting up devices obviously you know there’s a number of other connected services and accounts that I have on the channel but let’s go to the skills library to start talking about that and you know we’ve been in here once before a couple times before throughout this video but what I want to show you is you know you have kind of the discovery screen here this is a newer interface that Amazon has put out you have the discovery screen and and this is where they want you to try different things add different things to it you can see there’s different finance skills and things like that so now there are other categories obviously within the application here and you know I don’t want to go through everything here within the the whole skills library but there are a ton of different options for you we’ve seen that you know you can connect services like all those different news services but there’s a lot of utilities and the task management those kinds of things those are very powerful and but the only thing right now is that in a lot of cases you have to remember the name of the skill that you’ve enabled so in terms of home control this is another place you can come to start adding those things and now I will show you one application that I thought was pretty pretty useful actually and it was called hospital wait times so there’s a hospital wait time it’s specifically actually for the area that I live I hit unable to use and now it’s just enabling that skill on my of Isis on my account in general so there it is and if I ever want to I can come back and I can disable that skill if I like now the other thing you can do is you can manage from your skills here and you can see this is the list you can go into those and you can enable and disable from each of those you can also see some of those specific you know it’s a some specific commands that might help you so let’s go ahead and use this hospital wait times start hospital wait times welcome to hospital wait times let’s start by personalizing your hospital area area set tell me what you would like to do say again wait times or get shortest wait time or get longest wait time get short estate time the hospital with the shortest way time so now obviously I have the specific

hospital and all of that was done relatively real time I mean I had to switch some screens here to get prepared to talk to you guys but ultimately as soon as you enable a skill you should be able to use it and that’s the same with your home control devices all of those things so adding these different services happen relatively in real time as you click through so now let’s go ahead and let’s do a little bit of work here let’s get some multi-room audio setup and let’s get this actually paired these with your Amazon Echo Sub so we’re back in the devices screen and what we can do is we can add a number of different things so we’ve seen kind of the group where you add devices into a group let’s not talk about that right now but let’s go ahead and add a multi-room speaker capability so I’m just going to choose the down tear downstairs as my name of this group basically you’re creating another group but it’s a multi-room audio group and i’m going to choose two dots and actually I’ll just go ahead move my other dot here into the screen you can see I have a couple now I’m going to basically save that and now it’s connecting these two Echoes together as a group or as a multi-room audio group so I can refer to this as downstairs right now I can edit that name in the future but ultimately I’m getting these two devices to work as a pair okay so now it created that multi-room audio group and you can see the downstairs multi-room audio group here I can edit the name as we talked about and I’m able to if I’d like add other devices so if you have audio sync problems there’s basically a utility there where you have to tell the device to play music and then it will start that and you hit that button and then it will try and synchronize the two so that’s an attempt at Amazon to make this relatively simple so let’s go ahead now and utilize this multi-room audio group play Foo Fighters on downstairs group shuffling songs by Foo Fighters playing on the downstairs group on Amazon music so you can see actually I used a different way qward and that’s a little tip or trick there for you a different way qward on these two devices it stops the two from trying to answer each other so that’s a nice little feature there I set basically this one to the word Echo and this one to the standard wake word there all right so the last thing to really do here is to create a stereo pair or a sub woofer and a stat 2.1 so you can create a stereo pair on your own just by selecting those two devices but if you want to add in a sub because you have one you can now so if I wanted to I can simply just choose my two dots and I’m done and that doesn’t pair my sub if I choose my sub now I have a two point one system so you can see that the other thing to note here is I have a wireless extender in my home and normally this dot is sitting closer to that extender so I’ve put that on there you can see it actually bridging those two networks so that’s actually a really nice feature you can see my sub is on the external and the dot if the first dot is on the external and my second one this is my newer one is on that base Wi-Fi because it’s down here in the basement so as you hit next what you have to do is you have to set a channel so this is my right channel right now you can see and you can always modify this later so you don’t need to worry about that and it goes through a connection process now as it connects that it basically pairs the volume control together for these two and if you’ve included this up this one as well so you know what they’re going to be managed together and so you can essentially mute one of these if you’d like or you know you saw a little bit earlier here I’m using a different way qer on this device then this device so then I could leave them open if I wanted to all the time so we’re just going through the connection process and then let’s start music and I’ll show you it’s not a full demo here I’m just going to show you it working but what I’m also going to do is let that play for a few seconds and you know if you want a demo of the differential between these devices and a sub go and look for our sub video here or our Amazon Echo Sub review video here on the channel you can find it in in the channel basically under playlists so you know ultimately we’re all set here and

all right so back in the devices screen here you can see my stereo sub pair it’s down at the bottom and if I had to manage things I can go into each device and manage them and then I can unpair the speaker system so let’s go ahead and play some music now play dear Rouge shuffling songs bye dear Rouge on Amazon using so now you can see that I’m managing these together and as I change the volume on one it changes on the other it doesn’t matter which one I’m using Volume two five so I’m always blown away by how powerful this Amazon Echo Sub actually is it’s a pretty impressive sub when you’re just talking about little devices like this and it actually pairs relatively well I’ve been relatively impressed by that now in terms of a set of video clearly we’ve gone a long ways today and we’ve done I think just about everything you know as you get more connected services more connected things in your home you’re obviously going to have to connect different things we have videos on the channel for how to do that how to go through those specific components and how to optimize those services to save you time and even money here so of course join up here on the channel and you can always refer back to this video because you know it’s got that index down at the bottom so go ahead save that in whatever way you like to you can just save it and of course share this with your friends and family to help them get there Echo Dot and really any Echo device set up in their home and working for them so thanks again everyone for watching and we’ll see you next time
